On The Road
So Oprah has selected Cormac McCarthy’s The Road for her first contemporary fiction pick in years.
In these days when “Men and Depression” makes the cover of Newsweek, it’s certainly courageous to recommend that we all read together a novel in which everything we know is lost forever and the only people left on earth are either cannibals or dinner.
Yes, I know it was an NBCC finalist. That’s because it’s a masterfully turned work of literature that deserves laurels and good attention.
But I’ve been trying to crawl from the Slough of Despond for three weeks, having read that artful novel on a gray, late-winter Saturday morning. And having just made it out, I was pondering happy endings. . . .
Silly me.
